Sometime between 5 pm and 8 pm on July 4th, a firearm was shot causing the bullet to pierce through an above-ground pool in the rear yard of a residence in the 200 block of E. Roland Street. A father and his child had been swimming in the pool at this time.
Due to the amount of noise from fireworks exploding in the area, the father did not specifically hear the gunshot. He saw the pool was leaking, however, did not realize the hole in the pool had been made by the bullet. It wasn't until today, when he was looking in the pool, that he found the bullet on the bottom of the pool.
An officer was dispatched to the residence and completed an investigation.
The Azusa Police Department wants you to know that discharging a firearm in the city is not only a violation of law, but an extremely dangerous act. Had that bullet struck the father and/or his child, a tragedy would have happened on a holiday meant for celebration.
Known as "Celebratory" gunfire, the firing or discharging of a weapon into the air on popular holidays such as New Years Eve, Christmas, and The Fourth of July, has caused hundreds of injuries and at least 38 deaths in Los Angeles County alone. Most injuries are to the head, feet, and shoulders, according to the Centers for Disease Control.
