On August 21st, 2016, at about 7:18 PM, Azusa Police Officers responded to Zacatecas Park on the 900 Blk of west First Street in Azusa, regarding a traffic collision. Upon arrival, they discovered that the driver of a Mitsubishi Eclipse had driven through a chain link gate, a chain link fence, struck a tree and had become disabled in some shrubbery. The entire length of the collision path was nearly 300 feet. This area of the city-owned park encompasses a Little League baseball field. Fortunately no baseball games or practices were being held at that time. However, there were numerous people, including several children using the park when the collision occurred. Several bystanders detained the driver until Police Officers arrived.
The driver was later identified as Eduardo Castillo, a 28 year old Covina resident. Castillo displayed symptoms of being under the influence of alcohol and was subsequently arrested for DUI. He provided a blood sample which will later be analyzed to determine his blood alcohol concentration. A 12 year old boy who was playing just a few feet away was struck by debris from the collision. He suffered moderate injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Because of the injuries caused by Castillo, he was charged with the felony section of DUI and is being held at the Azusa PD jail on $100,000 bail. He will be scheduled for arraignment at the West Covina Superior Court on Tuesday, August 23rd.
