On June 1, 2016, the Federal Bureau of Investigation released a public service announcement in regards to reports of extortion attempts via email related to recent high-profile data thefts.
Recipients who receive these emails are told that personal information will be released to their family, friends and social media contacts, if a ransom is not paid.
