On November 23rd, 2016 at about 9:57 AM, an Azusa Police Officer was patrolling the area of Baseline and Citrus. He conducted a registration check on a passing vehicle and found that it had been reported stolen from the city of Ontario earlier in the morning. As the Officer attempted to catch up to the vehicle, it entered a residential tract in the unincorporated area of Azusa and began to speed up. As the Officer was about to stop the vehicle, the driver jumped out of the moving vehicle in the area of Viceroy and Ghent, and began to run away. The abandoned car veered up a sidewalk and into the front yard of a residence. The driver jumped into the backyard of several homes in an attempt to escape. Officers and Detectives from the Azusa Police Department contained the area with the assistance of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and their helicopter. Several neighbors alerted the Officers to the general area where the suspect was seen running. Officers ultimately searched a shed in the back yard of a house on the 18400 block of E. Ghent St and found the suspect hiding. He was taken into custody without further incident. Identification of the suspect is still pending.
The suspect was booked for suspicion of auto theft, and resisting arrest, and is being held at the Azusa Police Department jail on a $25,000 bail. He will be scheduled for arraignment at West Covina Superior Court on Tuesday, November 29th.
