Azusa Police Officers Save Driver During Medical Emergency

news_release_standard

On June 13, 2018, at about 6:46 pm, Azusa Police Department Officers were dispatched to the area of San Gabriel Avenue and Foothill Boulevard regarding a possibly intoxicated driver, who was swerving and driving erratically. Officers located the vehicle and attempted a traffic stop near the intersection of Calera Avenue and Alosta Avenue.

The driver failed to pull over for the officers, for about one mile while driving at extremely slow speeds. The driver ultimately stopped at Route 66, west of Grand Avenue, in Glendora.

Officers gave commands to the driver to exit the vehicle, however, the driver refused to exit, and a standoff ensued.  Using information from the vehicle's registration, the department's dispatchers were able to speak with the driver's wife, who informed them that her husband had a medical issue.

Based on the circumstances and believing the driver may be suffering from a medical emergency, the officers made the decision to approach the vehicle.  The officers quickly determined the driver was in fact suffering from a medical condition, and paramedics were immediately requested.  The driver was transferred to a local hospital for further treatment.
