The Introduction Of National Night Out

In 1984, the National Association of Town Watch (NATW) introduced "National Night Out" to America. The NATW, which is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting various crime prevention programs across the country, held the first National Night Out on August 7th, 1984.

The purpose of National Night Out is to promote crime prevention activites, police-community partnerships and to send a message to criminals that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back against crime.

In the very first year, over 400 communities participated in National Night Out across 23 states, with 2.5 million people getting involved.

National Night Out now involves over 37.8 million people and 16,124 communities from all fifty states, U.S. Territories, Canadian cities, and military bases worldwide. The City of Azusa and the Azusa Police Department take great pride in being one of these communities.
