On Sunday, November 12, 2017, at 7:26 PM, the Azusa Police Department was contacted by concerned citizens and school district administrators who independently reported that a 17-year-old male teen had allegedly posted a short, video clip on a popular, social medium platform depicting himself brandishing what appeared to be a semi-automatic handgun. Accompanying the video clip was a brief caption that inferred a non-specific threat to a school campus the following morning.

With the prompt notifications to law enforcement authorities by concerned students, parents and school administrators, the Azusa Police Department acted swiftly to positively identify and locate the suspect in the video. Within a few hours, Azusa Police Department officers and detectives located the suspect in a home outside of the Azusa city limits and safely detained him without incident. The weapon used in the video was also recovered, however, turned out to be a replica/BB handgun rather than an actual firearm. Investigators were confident that the suspect acted alone and no other suspects are outstanding.

The juvenile suspect was later transported to an area medical facility for evaluation. Criminal charges are pending review of the case by the district attorney's office.

As in many cases, the Azusa Police Department relies on information and cooperation from local citizens to combat crime and address quality of life issues within the community. This case, in particular, illustrates such a partnership, where a potentially dangerous situation was quickly diffused through a collaborative effort.
