On December 22, 2016 at approximately 0406 hours, a 25 year old female resident of La Puente was traveling northbound at the 2000 blk. San Gabriel Canyon Road Azusa, CA 91702 in a 2014 Toyota Corolla when she lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle went off the road and fell approximately 100 feet into the San Gabriel River that flows along the Mountain Cove Community. The solo driver was able to exit her vehicle as it became submerged in the water. The driver swam to a nearby embankment and yelled for help. A nearby resident heard the call for help and notified the Azusa Police Department. Los Angeles County Fire Department Paramedics responded to the scene along with Azusa Police Officers. The driver sustained moderate non life threatening injuries and was transported to Los Angeles County USC Medical Center for treatment. Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Search and Rescue assisted the Azusa Police Department in follow up investigation and vehicle recovery. Driving under the influence of alcohol and unsafe speed are both suspected factors in this collision. As a result of the collision, the vehicle sustained major damage and was recovered by tow crews. There was no damage to public or private property.
