Azusa Police Detain Man for Making Gun Related Threats

On May 5th, 2017 at about 11:56 AM, the Azusa Police Department received a telephone call from a male advising that he was at Zacatecas Park, 924 W First St, armed with a handgun. He claimed that he was ready to engage the police using his firearm. The caller described his own attire, physical description, and the area in the park where he was located. As the Officers arrived, they saw the man in question. Due to several people being in the park, including a group of developmentally disabled people and their caretakers, officers prepared a tactical plan of approach to safely detain the man. Officers simultaneously secured several innocent people in the park while other officers approached the man who was reported to have the gun. While contacting the subject, commands were given but not followed, resulting in the subject being hit with a less lethal drag stabilized shotgun round. After being hit with the less lethal round, the subject fell to the ground and was safely taken into custody. The subject was taken to a local hospital for observation. No gun was found at the scene.

Azusa PD detectives later went to the subject's residence in the city of Azusa. They searched the residence and did not locate any firearms.
