On March 24th, at a bout 3 pm, Azusa Police Department officers went to the Segerstrom Science Center located on the Azusa Pacific University Campus in regards to a suspicious package which had been left inside a class room.
The officers spoke with a student, who had found a backpack attached to a podium in a suspicious way, inside the classroom. The student also heard what she believed was a ticking sound. Based on the possibility the backpack may have contained an explosive device, the student reported the incident to the university's Department of Campus Safety, who in turn called Azusa Police Department.
The officers located the backpack, and for the safety of the students, faculty and staff, evacuated two buildings. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Bomb Squad and Los County Fire Department responded to the scene, for further examination. The bomb squad removed the backpack from the classroom and rendered it safe.
